Anni Albers and Alexander Reed - Necklace Photo
In 1940 the Alberses travelled to Mexico with their former student Bill Reed. At the the then-recent excavation of the temple of Monte Alban they saw pieces of jewellery comprised of precious materials but also shells and pebbles. Once back home at Black Mountain College, Albers and Reed, inspired by they combinations of precious and everyday materials began experimenting to create their own jewelry designs.
"In the 5 & 10 cents stores we discovered the beauty of washers and bobby pins: Enchanted we stood before kitchen-sink stoppers and glass insulators, picture hooks and erasers. The art of Monte Albán had given us the freedom to see things detached from their use, as pure materials, worth being turned into precious objects.” — Anni Albers, from her talk “On Jewelry” at Black Mountain College, March 25, 1942.
